DC mayor asks residents, visitors to stay off roads

In the event of power outages, Bowser said Pepco, the local utility company, is working with the District of Columbia’s Department of Transportation to fully prepare for any possible problems in the region.

At a press conference Friday evening, Bowser asked residents and visitors to get off the roads.

Besides the heavy snow and strong winds, de Blasio said the city can expect whiteout conditions.

– Washington, D.C.: In D.C. and Baltimore about 20 to 25 inches of snow is expected. A couple intrepid people walked along the cleared portion of the road, ducking into the deeper snow when vehicles approached.

A trooper was injured Friday night while assisting a disabled vehicle on Interstate 64 in New Kent County.

Kentucky State Police say emergency crews are making their way to cars stranded along Interstate 75 in a major snowstorm with water, fuel and snacks. In Virginia, Reagan National Airport reported 6.8 inches of snow and Elma had 15 inches.

Forecasters say snow accumulations over 12 inches are expected in the southern half of the state, with the Gettysburg area and southeastern Pennsylvania likely to see the most snow.

The National Weather Service says it’s recorded 6.2 inches of snow at its office in North Little Rock, just outside the capital city. I never like to close down the government, the schools or see the city not be able to function as expected, but none of us have control over Mother Nature. Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 20s, with increasing winds up to 40 miles per hour.

The National Weather Service is forecasting blizzard conditions in the District, with up to 20 inches of snow over the weekend.

Meteorologist Paul Kocin with the service’s Weather Prediction Center says snowfall as heavy as 1 to 3 inches an hour could continue for 24 hours or more in the area.

Philadelphia; Trenton, New Jersey; Newark, New Jersey; New York City; and Long Island.
