The derailment comes one day after a Metro safety official told board members that a train operator who ran a red signal earlier this month – almost hitting an oncoming passenger train and two track workers – was in a rush to take his lunch break and had his radio turned off. The transit agency adds that the incident occurred at an interlocking area at East Falls Church, but outside a zone where SafeTrack maintenance work is being conducted through this weekend.

Metro officials are telling Orange/Silver customers west of Ballston to use alternate travel options this morning. The derailment is causing delays on the orange and silver lines with no service between McLean and Ballston. The fourth and fifth cars of the Metro trains were affected.
The Arlington Fire Department says the derailment is “minor”. No estimated time on service restoration.

Separately, riders on the green and yellow line are reporting delays after thick smoke filled the Georgia Avenue-Petworth station.
