DC officer helps defuse teens’ fight with dance-off challenge

Taylor said the officer told the group that if the teen won the dance-off, the teens could stay. Ms. Taylor says she laughed at her, but instead of brushing her off, the officer claimed her own moves were better and challenged her to a dance-off. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, we need more cops like you, ‘ she said.

That’s exactly what a police officer told a crowd of teenage girls after attempting to break up a fight between their two groups.

But you’ve got to admit, when it comes to healing the tense relationship between police and the black community, its a welcomed start.

After the student in the first video reportedly refused to put away her phone in class, South Carolina officer Ben Fields grabbed her in a violent response that cost him his job. She started a dance-off. She tells the Post all seven of her siblings have been roughly handcuffed or arrested in the past for nonviolent crimes.

“I mostly hold my head down when I dance, so I didn’t really see her”, the teen recalled.

Taylor spoke at length about how her positive experience in interacting with the officer brightened her outlook on law enforcement.

Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier and Mayor Muriel Bowser praised the officer’s actions as did President Barack Obama. “There are a few good cops”, Taylor said.

“It’s kind of embarrassing that this became so big”, she is quoted as saying.

Taylor, who had not seen the officer before Monday and doesn’t know her name, said she still can’t believe she danced with the police.

Maybe not with so much style, but, yes, this does happen every day, all over the country.

Seventeen-year-old Aaliyah Taylor says the officer laughed and said she had better dance moves. WMAR
