In a third incident, a knife-wielding man dressed as a security guard injured eight people at a Minnesota shopping mall. He said the other injuries were minor, described as scrapes and bruises.
Officials said initially that they didn’t believe the bombs found Saturday night in New York City and Saturday morning in New Jersey were connected to worldwide terrorism. He may be related to five people who were taken into custody for questioning by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in connection with Saturday night’s bombing in Chelsea. “What we didn’t know yesterday, we don’t know yet, is anyone taking credit for it and is it linked to worldwide terrorism”.
Clinton was briefed on the incidents shortly after her speech to the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation dinner in Washington.
In addition to the blast in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood on Saturday, a pipe bomb exploded in a New Jersey shore town before a charity 5K race and an unexploded pressure cooker device was found blocks away from the explosion site in Chelsea.
Passengers said they were stuck on trains for hours Sunday night.
The FBI has released a wanted poster and New Jersey State Police have released additional photos of a 28-year-old suspect in Saturday night’s Chelsea bombing and the earlier explosion in Seaside Park, New Jersey.
A pipe bomb exploded in Seaside Park, New Jersey, on Saturday, about an hour from the Elizabeth train station.
Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro says a total of 29 people were injured in the Chelsea blast. He says one person’s injuries were serious and the rest were minor.
While officials confirmed five people were taken into custody and questioned late Sunday after a traffic stop on the Verrazano Bridge in connection with the bombing, they would not provide details on those individual’s possible relationship to Rahami.
She would not provide further details, but a government official and a law enforcement official who were briefed on the investigation said that five people in the vehicle were being questioned at an FBI building in lower Manhattan.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about the ongoing investigation.
Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said the Chelsea explosion was not in a dumpster but next to one in the street.
In New York, law enforcement officials and the mayor said that without knowing who’s responsible or what the motive was, it’s too soon to call the Saturday bombing a terror attack.
The blast happened in front of a residence for the blind.
The explosion came just after 8:30 p.m. ET at 133 W. 23rd St., between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. On Saturday, a pressure-cooker bomb packed with shrapnel exploded in Chelsea, and another device was found in the same neighborhood later that day. It’s with an intent to cause damage and danger and intimidate a civilian population, so that, by definition, is terrorism.
Chris Gonzalez, visiting from Dallas, was having dinner with friends at a restaurant in the area. “One of our police officers went to investigate and to wake him up, and realized that he was [Rahami], the suspect that had been being sought in the bombings”, the mayor told WABC.
The FBI and Homeland Security officials, along with the ATF arson and explosive task force are also at the scene. The FBI’s NY field office confirmed a traffic stop had been conducted, but added that no charges had been made. No one was injured.

He said there were “certain commonalities” in the way the bombs in NY and New Jersey were constructed.
