“I had a fantastic time here, first as a player and for the last 10 years as a coach”, said De Boer who won 112 caps for the Netherlands before becoming a junior coach at the Ajax.
The 45-year-old’s side missed out on the Eredivisie title on Sunday to PSV Eindhoven after a 1-1 draw against De Graafschap.
“After winning four league titles in a row the 2014/2015 season was a disappointment, we wanted to take revenge this season and we have done everything to reach that goal”.
With Everton boss Roberto Martinez set to be sacked, De Boer was named as one of the likely replacements.
The club’s new majority investor Farhad Moshiri alongside chairman Bill Kenwright were expected to make a decision at the end of the season, but brought the Catalan’s reign to an end ahead of the final Premier League game of the season against Norwich.
“What I will do, I don’t know yet – a year without a club is also an option”.
Ajax director Edwin van der Sar paid homage to de Boer saying that he is “hugely ambitious”.
“I started to realize more that it was time for something else”.

‘When you see what Ronald Koeman has done at Southampton I would argue that Frank is at least as good as him when you see what he has achieved at Ajax. “He told the club’s board in a meeting”, Ajax said in a statement issued in Amsterdam.
