California doctor Howard Kornfeld was first contacted by Prince representatives on April 20, one day before the singer’s body was discovered at his home, attorney William Mauzy told reporters.
Police said they were unable to investigate that report because the information was a year old. An autopsy was done the day after Prince’s death, but its findings, including the toxicology results, weren’t expected for as many as four weeks.
“Dr. Kornfeld was never able to meet Prince, never talked to Prince, and was sadly not able to arrive on time to help Prince”, Mauzy said.
On Tuesday, the Carver County Sheriff’s office released a log of dozens of emergency calls made from Prince’s Paisley Park home.
The legendary music icon was found dead in an elevator at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota, on April 21.
Prescription opioid medication was found at the scene, according to a law enforcement source with knowledge of the investigation but not authorized to speak publicly.
The Northern California doctor who was asked to help Prince before his death is an addiction and pain specialist who has championed the use of a semi-synthetic opiate to treat pain. As part of that investigation, federal prosecutors and DEA investigators will look into how Prince obtained prescription medication and from whom, the agencies said Wednesday.
An attorney announced a shocking new revelation in the the mystery that is Prince’s death: He was facing a “grave medical emergency” that involved addiction.
The elder Kornfeld runs the Recovery Without Walls clinic in Mill Valley, north of San Francisco, which offers confidential treatment. “While this remains an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment”.
Mauzy expressed concern that Andrew Kornfeld could face charges, but said he believes he would have immunity with regard to the medication in his backpack under a Good Samaritan 911 law.
Kornfeld neither gave medicine to Prince nor saw him conscious, the lawyer said.
The Kornfelds’ involvement began just hours before Prince’s death, Mauzy said.
It fell to Andrew Kornfeld to call 911 because the Prince representatives were too distraught, Mauzy said.
A probate hearing on Monday concluded with a special administrator appointed but no will. Bremer Trust will work on behalf of the heirs of the estate under the direction of the court, a representative said in a statement.
