Deacon gets permanent nod for superintendent of schools

Before the meeting, Baker said the budget was “close to being flat” and will result in an overall tax decrease in two of the towns in the school district – Albion and Fairfield – and a tax increase in Benton and Clinton. SD8 staff intend to temporarily relocate to Central School by the end of the year, although a permanent home for the district office hasn’t yet been decided on.

Reynolds will hold a series of budget meetings open to the public in the Reynolds High School multipurpose room, 1698 S.W. Cherry Park Road.

Gema Quetzal Cardenas, 16, of Oakland, has been appointed to the California State Board of Education and is also serving as a student director on the Oakland Board of Education for 2017-2018.

Asked why he chose to apply for the vacant seat, Perry said, “I always enjoyed being on the school board”.

Beacock doesn’t deny contacting councillors, but said it was done in response to Smith’s email, which stated that the board is not working on a site, nor would the board engage with town officials.

Voters’ acceptance of the fact-finder’s recommendation, 1,590 to 1,347, meant that the school district could not exceed the appropriated $1.68 million in drawing up a new contract, according to Saunders.

The three board members who voted against the motion were Barbara Jackson – who represents the district in which Mayewood is; Linda Alston – who represents the district in which F.J. DeLaine is; and board Chairman the Rev. Daryl McGhaney, who had asked at a previous meeting to slow the process of deciding what to do down.

Reynolds has about 9,949 students, which is 830 students fewer than in the 2014-15 school year. Board members must decide between staying the course after some improvement or taking a chance on bigger changes.

She said the district already owns that land and the consolidation is a necessity for any future building that may go there.

Board Vice Chairwoman Jenny Boyden said when Baker’s initial proposal came before the finance committee, the members knew that was more than they could support.

School board members agreed Thursday to hire the additional teachers after a presentation from administration on the need and possible funding options. The Baltimore Sun reported in October that more than two dozen schools failed to conduct the required number of fire drills previous year, and school officials pledged to improve.

“We made some really tough decisions”, said Business Administrator Annette Wells as she outlined the spending plan to the public.

Students from all Florence One high schools, district officials and state representatives joined in on the conversation.

The third finalist, Dr. James Hammack, is the superintendent of Byron Community School District No. 226 in Byron, Illinois. “As I’ve said, things are looking absolutely, wonderfully favorable at this point”.
