The shooting occurred around 11:20 p.m. Friday when Glenn approached a police auto and fired through the window at Sgt. Sylvia Young, who was sitting in her cruiser at 52nd and Sansom Streets in west Philadelphia, police said.

He also fired into a bar, injuring a security guard, and grabbed a woman and later shot her, then fired into a vehicle, hitting a man and woman. Police say Glenn then fired five shots into Maximum Level Lounge, located on the 5100 block of Sansom Street, striking a male security guard in the leg.

By nightfall, police say Glenn shot into an occupied auto, shooting one woman. He also fired into a bar, injuring a security guard, and grabbed a woman and later shot her, then fired into a auto, hitting a man and woman.

Philadelphia police later identified the suspect shot and killed as 25-year-old Nicholas Glenn, a local man with a long criminal record.

Across the street, a couple – Salih and her 36-year-old boyfriend – had just parked their vehicle, a white Nissan Altima, outside Salih’s apartment.

The injured police officers were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and Police Commissioner Richard Ross had arrived at the hospital by about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, 6ABC reported.

Police say that the incident began when officer Ray Azucena and probationary officer Xavier Serrano, who was in field training, arrived at a home in response to a suicide report and found one person shot dead inside the house, police say.

“Obviously, he was hell-bent on hurting a lot of people”, the commissioner said at a news conference, adding that “we aren’t absolutely clear as to why”.

Police sources identified the suspect to NBC Philadelphia as Nicholas Glenn, 25.

The commissioner, though, said police have not determined a specific motive for the rampage, other than the general ” ravings” against law enforcement expressed in his letter. She said he was hit in the leg, but as of Saturday morning was in good spirits. Glenn also had at least three magazines, and a plastic bag with 13-15 live rounds, according to police. He hit one officer, a University of Pennsylvania policeman named Edward Miller.

“All in all, it was a really awful, scary night”, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said. And I think all in all it was really a bad scary night. The other officer was talking with her family. Police didn’t immediately release the man’s name. “He clearly was trying to target a police officer, as he did”.

The university police officer was shot in the pelvis and the right ankle, police said, and he is in stable condition at a hospital.

In a statement Saturday, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf thanked law-enforcement officers and said in part: “Our thoughts are with the officers and other victims of this horrifying violence”. Numerous charges were related to drug possession and distribution.
