Dead; At Least 7 Injured After New Jersey Transit Buses Collide
WPIX-TV reported the crash occurred in Newark at around 6:15 a.m. Emergency personnel told the station that at least one driver had died. One bus that was traveling west on Raymond Boulevard-with no passengers on board-struck the side of another bus carrying 19 passengers that was traveling north on Broad Street, one of the officials said.

At least nine other people were hurt in the crash. Several passengers had to be extricated from the number 13 bus which sustained the most serious damage.
NJ TRANSIT is advising customers that service in downtown Newark will experience delays and detours due to the crash.
“This is a tragic day for New Jersey Transit”, interim Executive Director Dennis Martin said Friday.
The mayor would not comment on reports that Barthelus, who was driving an empty bus, sped through the intersection against a red light. Of the remaining four, they went either to St. Michael’s Medical Center or to Beth Israel Medical Center, both of which are in Newark. “It was awful. We saw people with head injuries, leg injuries”.
An investigation surrounding the cause and moments leading up to the crash is now pending.

Baraka said Barthelus had left the Ironbound section of Newark to begin his regular run on the 59 Line. One of the buses is on its side.
