Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey said at a news conference Monday that a deputy sheriff was also shot but is in stable condition.

Two bailiffs were fatally shot and one deputy sheriff suffered minor injuries in the attack, the Berrien County Commissioner told ABC 57 News.

Members of the public “went for shelter once the shooting occurred and fearless officers were able to come to the rescue and bring the shooter down”, Bailey said at a news conference on Monday afternoon. Local officials have not confirmed whether anyone was killed but reports from WZZM-TV suggest the shooter and two others have been killed.

“I stand here with a heavy heart today with what occurred at the courthouse”, he said.

Mr Fowler said both men were: “100 percent police officers carrying on in their retirement by being in the courtroom”.

It was as yet unclear exactly how the shooter was able to grab the gun, Bailey said.

At least three people are dead at the Berrien County Courthouse following a shooting, an employee at the county prosecutor’s office said.
