Deadly ‘Game of Thrones’ Heroin Sweeps Across Northern New England

A unsafe strain of heroin with a “Game of Thrones” label has been circulating in Vermont and New Hampshire, where officials have counted almost a dozen recent overdoses. Monday, police in New Hampshire arrested a man accused of distributing the drug following an overdose in that state.

This specific blend was described by police as potentially a mixture of heroin and fentanyl. The “Game of Thrones” blend is extremely powerful and unsafe, according to health officials in the area.

The small city of Barre reported nine heroin overdoses, including one fatality, over the weekend as authorities warned of an especially risky strain of the drug.

Dealers labeling street drugs with various names as a form of branding is typical, according to police. Richardson has been charged with two counts of sale of heroin, possession of heroin with the intent to distribute, and possession of a narcotic drug, WCVB reports.

Dr. Mark Depman, the director of the emergency department of the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, said the hospital saw 11 overdoses in 2015 and 12 in 2014.

A 10th overdose was reported in northern Vermont over the weekend in Newport. The heroin is believed to be laced with fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is 50 times stronger than heroin.

Lebanon police say the drug is most likely a mix of heroin and Fentanyl, which is a powerful drug used for pain.

“The heroin that was recovered, stamped ‘Game of Thrones, ‘ appears to have a high potency level”, Lebanon Police said in a release.
