Deadpool 2 Is Already Greenlit

That’s kind of a big deal considering that most studio films (especially superhero films, and even more especially projects that are deemed this risky) tend to cycle through several screenwriters and drafts before landing on a screenplay that’s basically stitched together, Frankenstein-style.

With just a couple of days to go until Deadpool opens in theaters, a sequel to the likely-to-be-a-huge-hit Marvel movie is already in the works.

Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have already started on the script for the sequel which, according to The Hollywood Reporter, has been given the green light. From the look of the 4-day holiday weekend box office estimates ($65-70 million), it’s looking as if that gamble has paid off for Fox. Ryan Reynolds would be a certainty to return, of course, although whether Deadpool director Tim Miller stays involved remains to be seen. The limited budget is striking, as evidenced by the film’s bevy of dialogue scenes in grimy interiors, but with this kind of success on tap Fox will no doubt be expanding the scope of the sequel.

“In the future, if we’re doing a bunch more Deadpool movies, we’re really going to explore the X-Men a lot”, Reynolds said in a recent interview. Deadpool opens in cinemas on February 10 in the UK, February 11 in Australia and NZ, and February 12 in North America.

No details have been released on what direction a “Deadpool” sequel may take but some are speculating that Reese and Wernick may take the opportunity to finally introduce the X-Force – a mutant team-up led by Cable, Cyclop’s son.
