‘Deadpool’ dominates again with $55 million in 2nd week
1 slot again this weekend. After ten days of release, Deadpool has grossed $235.39 million at the domestic box office and $256.5 million at worldwide box office for a global total of $491.89 million. Bringing in an older audience (76% were 25 or older), the historical drama managed just $7.3 million. Deadpool has also passed the box-office totals of other recent Marvel characters including Fantastic Four ($56.1 million), Ant-Man($180.2 million) and X-Men: Days of Future Past ($233.9 million). Its estimated gross to date is $117.1 million domestically. Either way Deadpool will definitely finish among 2016’s top 10 movies at the box office worldwide.

Performing the worst of the new releases was Focus Features’ “Race”, which took the sixth spot behind Warner Bros.’ “How to Be Single’s” $8.2 million. Do not believe the A mark will save the film at the theater. The rest of the weekend should be more typical, with an increase today and a drop on Sunday.
Among the new openings in North America, Risen did the most, earning $11.8 million from 2,915 locations to claim one of the top debuts ever for a faith-based title after The Passion of the Christ ($83.8 million), Son of God ($25.6 million) and Heaven Is for Real ($24 million). “This certainly is a genre, with regards to faith-based films, that we’ve embraced and it’s a big part of our DNA now”.
Originally, A24 envisioned “The Witch” as a digital/VOD/multiplatform play when it acquired the micro-budgeted horror film after 2015 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic category.
Coming in at No. 4 was the original horror film, The Witch.
It was looking at $10 million opening in early tracking, and now holds a 60 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it’s CinemaScore was only C-. That’s still way less than the $342.7 million made by the previous one, but probably good enough for Fox to turn a profit on it.

“The Witch” will be the first A24 movie to open at $1 million or more, and will be well on the path to profitability if it can gross $3 million.
