Deadpool review: A non-stop barrage of self-aware humour
Directed by Tim Miller and Daniel Way, Deadpool talks about the life of Wade Wilson (played by Ryan Reynolds), the man behind the seemingly spiderman suit. Miller shared thoughts about the 11-year journey to give the Marvel character his own feature film.

Reynolds explained that enthusiastic reaction to the footage “overwhelmed” 20th Century Fox, basically forcing the studio to greenlight the movie. They’re commodified and expensive – even if Deadpool’s budget is reportedly lower than the norm – and they have to serve many masters, guided more by the vision of executives focused on global markets and planning years out than they are by filmmakers trying to make a good standalone picture. “I think it’s the best way to have a relationship is to start as friends”.
Aside from his healing factor, Deadpool is also a highly skilled combatant, trained in multiple fighting styles and skilled with both swords and guns.
It helped that Kelly had also purposefully softened the character further than anyone had managed previously; by giving him a supporting cast of his own – including a love interest, although not the character Morena Baccarin plays in the Deadpool movie – he succeeded in turning Wade nearly sympathetic, were he not so purposefully frustrating due to his stream of never-ending wisecracks. Rather, Deadpool likes to pull them limb from limb and then either shoot the bad guy in the head or just lop it off with one of his katanas.
Miller said that he believes the reason “things seem so spontaneous or organic in the movie, is because Ryan was coming up with a lot of it while we were filming”.
In case you don’t feel trolled enough by that last one, try to make sense of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool as Conan’s mouthy masseur. Or should I say, hard at work. “Chicagoans are nearly more amusing that the people we have in Canada”, he added with a wink.
“There aren’t really many definitive Deadpool villains, apart from Cable”.
When I interviewed him back then a boyish Reynolds joked about wearing nothing but “baby powder and a little pinch of hope” in a pantless scene.
A year ago Marvel’s decidedly provocative anti-hero might not have been recognised by the average film fan, but thanks to a deft marketing plan he has cut through the public’s consciousness.

Maybe as an adult you’re interested in the film but not sure if the content is really up your alley, well I’m here for you too. We all know that Ryan Reynolds worked his (great, and heavily featured) ass off to get this on the big screen, and you don’t need to be a fan of the comics to see why. It’s the promise of a film that’s self-aware and that therefore knows better, though only the first part of that suggestion turns out to be true. But if you’re one of those annoying cynical seen-it-all viewers like me (or if you’re just a fan of Team StarKid, Supernatural and/or the Honest Trailer guys), you might not appreciate the many, many, many self-referential, intentionally on-the-nose jokes this movie throws directly into your face.
