Dealers, owners feel frustrated and betrayed by VW scandal
VW was able to fool the EPA because the agency only tested the cars on treadmill-like devices called dynamometers and didn’t use portable test equipment on real roads. VW has admitted to installing software on Volkswagen and Audi cars with four-cylinder diesel engines that switches on pollution controls when they are being tested. The delay between VW’s confession and the USA exposure of the scandal occurred as regulators prepared their response to the disclosure. Martin Winterkorn resigned as Volkswagen CEO earlier this week, saying he accepts “responsibility for the irregularities”, though he denied any personal wrongdoing. Its testing procedures have been criticized for being predictable and outdated, making it relatively easy for VW to cheat. The company’s lack of cooperation could figure into punitive action by the government.

Volkswagen isn’t the first automaker to lie to the public through the media.
