Online sales for Black Friday leaped 21.5 percent over a year ago, according to IBM’s Watson Trend Hub, which analyzes online sessions and transactions on retail Web sites.

The National Retail Federation released a survey Sunday that said more people are shopping online than in stores.

“Let’s also remember today is a working day, with millions on office computers or on their smartphones at work able to shop easily and quickly online”.

With just the click of a button, shoppers can make their purchases online, and Huddleston says because of the convenience, online sales are going up.

“Not as many sales this year so I’m probably doing most of my shopping online”, Elizabeth Pontius said after buying a few items at the Best Buy in Okemos.

And sales on Thanksgiving dropped to $1.8 billion from just over $2 billion.

Yes and no. Cyber Monday is online only, so there’s a lot more choice available. RetailNext, a company that provides in-store analytics software to retailers, said in-store traffic was flat over the weekend and that sales were down 1.5 percent at brick-and-mortar outposts.

Online browsing and orders had their strongest year yet, according to reports from IBM and Adobe that showed double-digit increases in online spending.

Similar deals to Black Friday can be expected, mostly electrical gadgets, like Dyson vacuums, laptops, tablets, mobile phones and homeware – including furniture.

It is very much likely for customers to get their hands on large savings prior to the last weekend on November, with many online retailers bidding extra incentives, stated officials from the stores.

The move toward earlier discounts was intensified this year because many retailers struggled with overstocked warehouses and store shelves heading into the fall, Christopher said.

Cyber Monday itself is expected to be the biggest online sales day of the season and ever, surpassing $3 billion in sales.

Tamara Gaffney, principal analyst, Adobe Digital Index, said, “US consumers have turned into digital shopping ninjas this holiday season as retailers continue to adjust to a huge influx of smartphone shoppers”.

But on the high street and in supermarkets there were no signs of the huge crowds which gathered previous year, or the scuffles which broke out as customers fought over big-ticket items.

Kimberley Turner, a mother in her forties who was shopping with her young son said she found the discounts less compelling.
