British Columbia struck by moderate natural disaster

Deaths also were attributed to the recent weather in Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas, and governors declared disaster declarations in numerous states. Some areas have reported local flooding from heavy rains overnight and throughout the previous week. Authorities in Georgia said they recovered the body of a man whose auto was swept away when floodwaters overtook it. With the recent heavy rains, that trickle grew into several feet of swiftly moving water. Among the dead were four worldwide soldiers temporarily stationed at Fort Leonard Wood.

At least eight people have died, Nixon’s office said.

In middle Tennessee, storms impacted wide areas, killing six.

Jose Daniel Santillano along with his wife Zuleyma and 4 children were among many families whose peaceful December 26th was suddenly turned upside down after a tornado threw their mobile home approximately a hundred feet from where it originally stood. Two people were injured.

“Everybody was checking on everybody”, said resident Mike Marcus. “It’s going to be a tough loss for everyone involved… hearts are heavy here”, said Capt. Jim Moody.

Steele told reporters that he had no insurance on his home and was counting on the generosity of friends and neighbors to try to sort out his life. According to the Weather Channel, that tornado was classified as an EF4, the second-strongest ranking on the scale used to measure tornado strength, with winds between 166 and 200 miles per hour.

Texas State Trooper Cindy Barkley says deteriorating conditions forced authorities to indefinitely close the highway for about 100 miles east of Amarillo to Oklahoma. As of 10:10 p.m. ET, there were almost 54,500 power outages across the state, and officials were warning of what was to follow the snow and rain: “bitterly” cold temperatures beginning Tuesday.

Tornados are common in the USA midwest in the spring, but rare during winter. The number of U.S. tornado deaths has declined since the 1920s, but since the 1990s it has leveled off according to the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman Oklahoma.

Hurricane Andrew, which struck Florida in 1992, destroyed 97 percent of all manufactured housing in Dade County, compared to just 11 percent of conventional homes.

Five of the deaths in Garland were believed to have been related to vehicles having been struck by a tornado near State Highway 190 and Interstate 30. “They said she was sweet”.
