The DPO also said the sudden rise in the water level has put more than 6,000 people at risk who live near the river.

“Our teams are working continuously in search and rescue operations, as well as to provide relief”, deputy spokesman Jhanka Nath Dhakal told the French Press Agency.

Heavy monsoon rains have swelled rivers across the country, triggering floods and landslides that have destroyed homes.

Earlier this month, two children were killed when a school in the capital partially collapsed in heavy rains.

Floods and landslides are common in India and Nepal during the June-September monsoon season and the death toll runs into the hundreds every year.

Hundreds of people have been displaced after swollen rivers breached their banks and flooded homes.

The number of those killed in the flood and landslide across Nepal has climbed to 64 after recovery of 10 more bodies in Pyuthan district of western Nepal, police said.

Tens of thousands of Nepalese are still living in tents following a set of devastating earthquakes that hit the Himalayan country previous year.

Numerous deceased were natural disaster victims who were living in a quake-damaged house after fix, the police said.

The Saptokoshi, Khado, Narayani, Mahuli, Chapin, Sundari, Khadak, Bhaluwahi and Amaha rivers are all flowing above the danger mark, while Mechi river has swept away an embankment.

In an attempt to save those still trapped in the incident, the government launched a rescue and relief operations in 14 of Nepal’s 75 districts that have been affected by the floods. Soldiers and volunteers have been rescuing marooned people while helicopters dropped food supplies, reported the Associated Press.
