It was later confirmed that those travelling to or from Maalbeek and passing through those stations had felt the blast.
Another explosion has rocked Brussels this morning, this time at the Maalbeek Metro Station close to European Union (EU) institutions.
Spokesman Guy Sablon gave the toll to The Associated Press after two explosions hit the Brussels airport on Tuesday morning and a third hit the city’s Maelbeek metro station. He and colleague said second blast was near the Starbucks. “We will do everything we can to help”.
Glass walls shattered and smoke filled the air, she said. Alexandre Brans, 32, said “there was a really loud explosion” as the train was pulling out of the station.
34 people were killed and 198 people injured during the coordinated attacks on Belgian capital. It was panic everywhere.
Although unconfirmed, it is widely speculated that the bombings might been attributed to the dramatic arrest of Paris bombing ringleader, Salah Abdeslam, who was apprehend by police in the suburb of Molenbeek on Friday afternoon.
Dozens of people have been taken on stretchers out of the airport, according to eyewitnesses. Photos on Twitter show people leaving the metro station with bloody faces. The move came after two separate bomb blasts had left over a dozen dead at the Brussels airport.
She advised people to stay at home or indoors.
It is believed that the first explosion at Zaventem airport was caused by a suicide bomber.
