The attackers were met with stiff resistance from the security personnel who were anticipating an attack, top sources said in Delhi, adding that the terrorists, hence, could not enter the air base.
Investigating officers said the terrorists killed a taxi driver and injured the friend of the police officer by slitting their throats with sharp-edged weapons and deliberately did not use the AK-47 and other weaponry they had to ensure that their identity was not revealed before the terror attack and the incidents looked like “normal crime”.
7 more Indian Army personnel have been killed as few militants are still hiding inside the premises of Air Base and the total counting of killed Army personnel has reached up to 11, where dead bodies of 4 attackers recovered from the Base.
Giving details of the attack, Air Commodore Dhamoon said: “During the search operation late in the night, one group was engaged by the Garuds (IAF commandos)”.
As the initial inputs suggest, the terrorists, who carried out the pre-dawn attack yesterday, had infiltrated through tributaries of river Beas in Pathankot in Bamiyal village, located close to the International Border.
It is unclear who attacked the air base, but there is suspicion that Kashmiri militants, based in Pakistan, might be involved.
At least four terrorists breached a high-security perimeter and entered the IAF base.
The taxi driver, according to information, was changing his tyres when the terrorists kidnapped him and took his vehicle for a distance before they killed him after his auto again broke down. All of them were reportedly in touch with their handlers in Pakistan even as they took on the security forces. Police had said Saturday evening that no attackers were still at large.
The technical area, where the IAF’s MIG-21 fighter jets, MI-35 attack helicopters and other critical assets were stationed, was secure, they said.
IAF helicopters were also seen flying over the base and nearby areas to assist ground forces in the operations.

Loud explosions were also heard at the heavily guarded air base in the early hours of Sunday, but it was unclear if the blasts were controlled explosions or gunfire. This happened near Damtal hills on the Punjab-Himachal border just 15 kilometers from the Pakistan border. Pakistan’s foreign ministry condemned the attack.
