Police said the motive for the shooting – which came amid a wave of Palestinian attacks on Israelis in recent weeks – was not immediately known.
Another police spokesperson, Luba Samri, told the Associated Press that at least three people were wounded. The shooting took place at what is being described as a bar or restaurant in central Tel Aviv on a busy weekend afternoon.
The Tel Aviv municipality told Israeli newspaper Haaretz it’s unclear yet if the shooting is a terror attack or a criminal act.
An AFP reporter said patrons at the pub and cafe had been targeted, and that the sidewalk was strewn with chairs and broken glass as police forensic officers examined the scene.
The assailant, identified as an Israeli Arab fled the scene as a manhunt is underway to track him down. He escaped as large police and security forces reached the scene. On the Israeli side, 21 people have died, mostly in stabbings, shootings and car-ramming attacks. The rest died in clashes with security forces.
Dramatic surveillance footage of the shooting released by Israel’s Channel10 and circulated online shows a group of men and women sitting outside the bar as a gunman opens fire with an automatic weapon.
At least 131 Palestinians have also been killed. The site of the attack is close to the Dizengoff Center Mall, a well-trafficked area on Fridays, according to the Times of Israel.

Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai visited the wounded in hospital and said he spoke with those who were able to talk.
