At least three people who died were found in vehicles, said Barineau, who also noted that some cars appeared to be thrown from the interstate, though it wasn’t known whether that was the case for the people found in the vehicles.

The National Weather Service said the Dallas area was under a tornado warning Saturday.

At least 14 people were confirmed dead – seven of them in MS, including a 7-year-old boy who perished while riding in a vehicle that was swept up and tossed by storm winds. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency said the victims were a 19-year-old female and two 22-year-old males. An Alabama official said volunteers have worked to distribute sandbags as flooding remained a major concern after severe storms battered the state.

Seven people were killed by more than a dozen tornadoes that ripped through Mississippi.

Other parts of the country face possible storms and blizzards Saturday.

The storms, feeding on unseasonably warm air, left a trail of destruction in rural communities from Alabama to IL, just as Christmas reached its crescendo. The previous high was 80, last hit on December 3, 2005.
