Kasich tweeted Saturday that the killings had claimed another victim and Ohio has lost another hero. The Navy statement did not give the sailor’s name.

Darlene Proxmire, Smith’s step-grandmother, confirmed his death to NewsChannel 15 in Ohio.

The college said he attended for a semester in fall 2007.

In fact, one of Smith’s last post on his Facebook site just a few days before his shooting stated, “Today is a HUGE day for cancer research and awareness”. “Angie is at work and I get to spend all day with the 3 little Princesses….no better way to spend Father’s Day”, he wrote in June.

Further, the two, and other friends, had spent considerable time at a gun range practicing shooting.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Smith and his wife and children at gofundme.com/chattanoogatn, which will be used to support medical, transportation, housing and needs of the family, it said.

“He’s an outgoing guy; he’s a fun guy; he’s someone you’d want to be around”, Sholl said.

His family here in Ohio say they didn’t worry about him getting hurt since he wasn’t deployed. “He loved his family”. “In case you thought it was about a 3 day weekend, parties or the beach.”& lt; /p>. “To think it happened on USA soil”.
