Debate takeaways: Without Trump, spotlight on Cruz, Rubio
He got really pummeled last night.

About 18 million people watched a CNN-hosted Republican debate in December.
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio called Trump “an entertaining guy, the greatest show on earth” but then pivoted the focus to attacking the records of President Obama and Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. However, he admitted that now he does not support amnesty.
The Republican Establishment is a reference to Jeb Bush, whose super PAC has been bllistering Rubio with ads, also focused on immigration. Trump called it an insult, and said he wouldn’t attend Fox’s debate.
No one in the TV news business expected Fox to surpass the 25 million mark this time.
Even in boycotting a debate with his Republican rivals, front runner Donald Trump managed to upstage them on 28 January with a typical dramatic flourish. Trump claimed she had been “unfair” in her questioning of him last summer, when Kelly asked him about his treatment of women and his characterization of those he dislikes as “fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals”.
Trump has raised the issue of “anchor babies” in the United States more than any other candidate, regularly suggesting in his stump speeches that children born on US soil to undocumented parents should not be USA citizens, as they are today considered under the law. He insisted at his alternative event that he wanted to participate in the debate, but it was important to “stand up for myself” after being “mistreated”. “When you’re treated badly you have to stick up to your rights…and it’s something our country needs to do”.
Another example was Trump declaring: “No one likes Ted Cruz!”.
In the “primetime” debate, it didn’t take long for Donald Trump’s name to come up. Next he shows Trump talking about how much he loves the state of Iowa before cutting to a clip of Trump asking, “How stupid are the people of Iowa?” We’re leading in the Iowa polls. And Cruz is in second place. I’m glad I wasn’t there.
I’ll see your $5 mil, he seemed to be telling the Fox News suits – and raise you a cool $1 million.

“I didn’t want to be here, I have to be honest”, Trump said at the rally at that was held at Drake University, only a short drive from the hall where the debate was held.
