While Hillary Clinton is expected to officially become the Democratic Presidential nominee on Tuesday, thousands are showing up all over the country to rally for Bernie Sanders.
“And I think these emails reiterate that reason why she should not be chair”, he told ABC’s This Week programme. She should step down, he said, “not only because of the prejudice I think [the DNC] showed during the campaign but also because I think we need new leadership that will open up that party” to working people, young people and “have the kind of vitality we need”.
Wasserman Schultz’s role at the convention had already been reduced, with a speaking role and later even the simple task of gaveling the convention in and out of session stripped from her.
Thousands of emails published through Wikileaks depict Dems chairwoman Schultz as a key figure in trying to sabotage Bernie Sanders’ candidacy.
Wasserman Schultz has criticized Sanders and his campaign for a chaotic outburst by the Vermont senator’s supporters at the Nevada State Democratic Convention, comparing their actions to a Donald Trump campaign event.
Yet Ms Wasserman Schultz recently proved a divisive leader, with the Sanders camp and its supporters concerned the DNC was angling for a Clinton nomination.
President Barack Obama says Donald Trump’s suggestion that the USA might not come to the defense of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies is another sign of what he calls Trump’s “lack of preparedness” on foreign policy. That came after a hack of embarrassing party emails and disclosures about party efforts to help Hillary Clinton in her primary campaign against Bernie Sanders.
After announcing her resignation late Sunday night, embattled DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was booed and heckled at a Florida delegation breakfast Monday morning.
DNC vice chair Donna Brazile will serve as Interim Chair through the election, according to DNC communications director Luis Miranda.
“I would ask her to step aside because she’s a distraction in a week that is Hillary Clinton’s week”, David Axelrod a former top strategist to President Obama, told CNN on Sunday ahead of the Florida congresswoman’s decision.
Emails posted to the website Wikileaks show that at least some DNC officials were looking at ways to undercut Sanders’ campaign, including questioning his religious beliefs.
Clinton beat Sanders by fewer than 2,000 votes in Kentucky’s Democratic Primary in May.
