Decade-long hormone therapy reduces breast cancer recurrence
“Oestrogen positive” breast cancer affects 40,000 women in the United Kingdom, with breast cancer the most common form of the disease in females worldwide.

The experimental approach pairs an antibody drug with chemotherapy.
None of the patients following the Mediterranean diet had a relapse, researchers said.
Results showed that those who received results over the phone did not have any more anxiety, worry about cancer-risk, or depression than those whose services were delivered in person, even among participants whose tests were positive for a cancer causing genetic mutations.
“Caloric restriction and weight loss not only promote healthy gene expression, but also improve blood flow and that way expose the normal cells to better nutrition and allow cells to fix DNA damage”, he said.
Because of that, as well as the absence of a survival benefit, “this is not as clear a result as one might like”, said J. Leonard Lichtenfeld, deputy chief medical office for the American Cancer Society who wasn’t involved in the study. She did not participate in the study. Image Credit: Fox News ” While prior research has suggested that administering immune therapy to patients with autoimmune disease may be feasible, doing so carries the risk of making their disease worse, and requires careful monitoring”, said Dr. David Gerber, co-director of UTSW’s Experimental Therapeutics Program, UPI reported. Patients with end-stage lung, pancreatic and prostate cancers, between 72 and 76 percent of whom were receiving aggressive treatment in 2012, saw an increase.
In the second study (abstract 5592), researchers examined the effectiveness of using metformin as a treatment for women newly diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia, a condition that occurs when there is a hormonally related unbalanced overgrowth of the uterine lining.
For every 100 women in the study who do not lose weight, they expect to see 23 have a recurrence of the tumour.
As many as one in five breast cancers are triple-negative, Bardia said.
A majority of breast cancer cases is triggered by the female sex hormone, estrogen.
Extending aromatase inhibitor therapy for 5 years beyond an initial 5 years resulted in a 34% reduction in recurrence in early-stage breast cancer. In general, they stop the cancer from progressing only for a few months, the researchers said.
At about 40 months after diagnosis, the women who received the surgery plus standard therapy lived an average of nine months longer than their counterparts who received standard therapy alone.
Median survival (half longer, half less) was 14.3 months, Bardia reported.
Professor Johann de Bono, head of drug development at the Institute of Cancer Research, London, and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, agreed it was an “exciting time in the field” with “major benefits for patients”.
The findings were published online in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The researchers also noted this technique allows delivery of higher doses of chemotherapy to the tumor, while sparing other parts of the body from side effects. Just one-third in the control group were considered healthy enough for more procedures.

She believes the new study supports the benefit of aromatase inhibitors, and “women are much more likely to continue a longer course with this therapy” than with tamoxifen.
