Decades of ‘Reckless Arms Trading’ Now Fuelling IS

Decades of “reckless arms trading” and lax controls have fuelled the atrocities committed by the extremist group ISIS, says a report from Amnesty International.

Amnesty International’s report focuses that the majority of the weaponry came from the decades old mismanagement of Iraq’s military dating back to the 1970s and 1980s when France, China and Russian Federation transferred billions of dollars of military hardware to Iraq. These weapons, manufactured at least 25 countries, are now in the hands of ISIS and being used to commit horrific abuses, killings, rape, torture and abduction – and forced thousands to flee their homes.

All three members of Vermont’s congressional delegation support President Obama’s call for a formal declaration of war against the terrorist group ISIS, but do not support sending a large number of US troops to Syria as part of the military strategy.

It said any state transferring arms to Iraq should invest heavily in controls, training and monitoring in order to meet worldwide standards.

USA officials told the Daily Beast that the approximately eight-page report “predicts that the self-proclaimed Islamic State will spread worldwide and grow in numbers, unless it suffers a significant loss of territory on the battlefield in Iraq and Syria”.

“According to Amnesty, “[ISIL] fighters are now equipped with large stocks of mainly AK variant rifles, but also U.S. military-issued M16, Chinese CQ, German Heckler & Koch G3 and Belgian FN Herstal FAL type rifles. The report also said governments haven’t done enough to ensure the arms they supply to militaries and security units won’t fall into enemy hands.

A new study by Amnesty International claims much of the weaponry used by Islamic State (IS) fighters was supplied by the Western powers now trying to bomb it out of existence. In general, Rubio argued the U.S doesn’t have a genuine coalition because the president has not been a world leader, and our allies won’t follow anyone who they don’t believe can lead. “To that end, we recommend that you pursue, at a minimum, several additional military options”. ISIS has also seized weapons from Syrian forces after taking over military bases there.

The survey also finds that Americans are concerned about a terrorist attack happening in the U.S.in the near future.

He said ISIS was able to effectively use some of its more sophisticated weapons, specifically anti-tank missiles, to capture the Iraqi cities of Mosul, Tikrit and Fallujah past year but has recently resorted to using improvised explosives, rather than conventional weapons, to inflict mass casualties on enemies.

“It’s a mistake to talk about ISIS just as an actor in Iraq and Syria”, says Gambhir.

In a video published on Facebook, coalition headquarters said Daesh is a derogatory version of the group’s Arabic name: al-Dawla al-Islamiya fi al-Iraq wa al-Sham.

Finally, focusing on what the country would not do, Obama reiterated a pledge to avoid a “long and costly ground war” in Iraq or Syria and implored Americans not to turn on all Muslims.
