It follows a meeting of the so-called International Syrian Support Group (ISSG) which met in Vienna in November and agreed on the parameters of a political plan for the war-torn country.

This diplomatic balancing act aims to keep both Moscow and Riyadh on board as the group struggles to cobble together peace talks. United Nations } diplomats said a key stumbling block was how to address the issue of the transitional government.

The meeting follows days of diplomatic maneuvering in a bid to narrow the gaps between key outside stakeholders.

Convened by US Secretary of State John Kerry, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura, 17 foreign ministers gathered at a NY hotel. “Without peace talks, the cease-fire can not be sustained”.

Earlier this week diplomats said some progress had been made on the most hard sticking point in the talks – the fate of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

He was referring to worldwide talks on Syria’s future held that same year in Switzerland.

He continued: “I believe the opposition should be serious and inclusive so that they can engage in serious talks”.

Similarly, rebel leaders and the moderate opposition have until now refused to hold talks with the Syrian regime, which has slaughtered thousands of its own citizens.

The resolution came after Moscow and Washington clinched a deal on a text. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin didn’t give details.
