Freedom of the press is still a long way off for journalists working in many countries.

In 2016, World Press Freedom Day coincides with three important milestones the 250th anniversary of the world’s first freedom of information law, covering both modern-day Sweden and Finland.

This in turn was a response to a call by African journalists who in 1991 produced the landmark Windhoek Declaration on media pluralism and independence. This year, the theme of Press Freedom Day is Access to Information and Fundamental Freedoms – This is your Right! This Act aims to ensure effective, equitable and low-priced exercise of the right to access to information, and provides for a right to appeal any decision denying a request for information or infringing on the right of access to information. “With it, we can work together for a world of dignity and opportunity for all”, he said. Europe itself is not immune to problems concerning media freedom and pluralism. Freely-reported news and information is inaccessible to almost half of the world’s population according to the non-profit Reporters Without Borders.

It categorically said that the right to freedom of opinion and expression includes freedom to seek, receive and impart information.
