After a brief respite in the last two days, rains pounded Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu again today even as Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the floods a national calamity and sought steps to mitigate the suffering of the people.

V. Padmavathy said she had been stuck on the first floor of her home for days after waist-deep water swept through her north Chennai neighbourhood. She also said there would be no half-yearly exams in schools. “It’s a great gesture and I am sure they will inspire others as well to do the same”, Dr RN Baba, senior Tamil Nadu Cricket Association official and father of the twins told TOI. “She badly needs to tone down the anger among the public who have lost everything”.

But longtime Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa Jayaram faced criticism for attempting to politicise the floods after a billboard appeared of her holding up a baby to save it from the floodwaters.

Social media was also abuzz with the red-and-yellow buses from Kerala, with a flood of thankful comments appearing below the pictures posted on Facebook.

She also ordered expeditious completion of agriculture and horticulture crops affected by the rains and floods and announced the compensation package.

She said: “In this calamity, there has been extensive destruction and damage to infrastructure as well as to the private property of thousands of families in the flood-affected areas”. The relief will be deposited in the cooperative bank accounts of farmers.

Meanwhile, in another release, the government said 15,32,746 persons were rescued, evacuated and accommodated in the relief centers. “The army has … distributed relief materials including water and food to over 20,000 people”, said Colonel Rohan Anand.

Six mobile medical units have been deployed and more than 250 patients have been treated at two separate medical camps.
