Deep Fried Twinkies coming to your Walmart freezer case

To eat the deep-fried Twinkie, you just need to pop it in the oven or fry it because they’ve already been battered and partially fried before freezing.

At 220 calories and nine grams of fat, the deep fried frozen variation is nearly twice as fatty as a a regular Twinkie, which comes in at 130 calories and four grams of fat, Time reported.

According to The Associated Press, the traditional cream-filled Twinkie is coated with a cake funnel batter, frozen and packaged. It’s a staple of the Texas State Fair, where it originated in 2002.

Hostess – creator of Donettes, Ho Hos and Ding Dongs – is taking its most popular creation and commodifying it for the take-and-bake crowd with frozen Twinkies that can be cooked at home.

THE PRICE: $4.76 per box of seven.

DISTRIBUTION: The Deep Fried Twinkies will be available starting Friday, Aug. 12, at Wal-Mart only for three months. After that, they will be available at other stores.

“It has a retro cool factor”, said Ellen Copaken, vice president of marketing at Hostess.

The estimated nutrition content of a single Deep Fried Twinkie (220 calories, 9 grams of fat) is almost equal to a two-pack of regular Twinkies (270 calories, 9 grams of fat). (By comparison, a regular Twinkie has 130 calories, four grams of fat and 14 grams of sugar.) If you want to add powdered sugar or a chocolate syrup drizzle, though, that’s a decision to make between you and your arteries. In June, it worked with the retailer on a tie-in for the new “Ghostbusters” movie, creating Key Lime Slime Twinkies for a short-term sale.
