While it may not be known in the US, Deezer is a very popular music service that has amassed plenty of fans worldwide.

6 million users isn’t a small number, but it’s less than half of what Apple claims and a fifth of Spotify’s total in terms of paying customers.

Update: This post has been updated to clarify that Cricket Wireless customers were also able to use Deezer in the USA before today’s wider launch and that Deezer Elite’s high-resolution streaming is still exclusive to Sonos speakers. Now it is making its service available to all consumers for $10 per month after an 30-day free trial.

Then there’s the rest of the competition.

It will be interesting to see if Deezer becomes popular in the U.S., it is entering a crowded market with Apple Music, Spotify and others. In fact, Deezer was expected to land in the States in 2014.

On the flip side, Deezer believes it could make up some ground in the market from its catalogue of 40 million songs – more than any of its competitors, its says.

Another major music streaming service is landing in the U.S. Deezer is also available on Sonos and Bose speakers, and the French company acquired Sticher podcast radio in late 2014. Flow offers a personalised stream based on a users tastes and listening history on Deezer. Still, CEO Dr Hans-Holger Albrecht is positive that there are gains to be made.
