Brian Pallister and the Tories have ousted the New Democrats and Premier Greg Selinger after 16 years in office. “I do take responsibility for the election outcome”, he said.

She said that hope hinged on Selinger being “the one person (people) can count on to ensure that health care is still going to operate the way it needs, that services are going to be delivered and they’re not going to be cut”.

The government estimates the cost to families will be $508 a year by 2018, but the Wildrose counters the government has failed to consider secondary impacts should businesses and municipalities pass the carbon levy on to consumers and taxpayers. By the time Canadians voted last October, they were generally favourable to both Tom Mulcair and Justin Trudeau, and the leader with the edge led his party to victory. Alberta’s Rachel Notley is now Canada’s sole remaining NDP premier.

Greg Selinger is resigning as leader of the Manitoba NDP, after leading the party to a crushing defeat in the provincial election. He was elected as a federal Canadian Alliance MP in 2000 and re-elected as a Conservative MP in 2004 and 2006.

NDP campaign director Jeremy Read said the party was “fighting a number of dynamics”.

“We had a tough game, we’re running with zero dollars and a fraction of the resources and a lot of negativity but we had fantastic candidates and fantastic volunteers”.

But the party picked up two additional seats, one by Cindy Lamoureux in Burrows and one by Judy Klassen in the northern Manitoba riding of Kewatinook, while holding on to Jon Gerrard’s seat in River Heights. The party stole seats from NDP strongholds, such as Brandon East, Riel, Gimli and Seine River.

Bokhari lost to NDPer Wab Kinew, a rapper and former broadcaster who had to defend himself during the campaign for misogynistic and homophobic language in his rap lyrics.

In 2011, the NDP won 37 of Manitoba’s 57 electoral districts. The situation was made worse when a number of cabinet ministers challenged Sellinger’s leadership resulting in a leadership campaign in which Sellinger managed to survive.

The NDP in Newfoundland and Labrador seemed on the rise through much of the past decade, but political scientists say an internal squabble managed to turn gains into a major setback.

“I wanna get back out into the community and get to know people even better and persuade those on the fence that I’m the right person to represent them”.

Voters have not let Selinger off the hook for breaking an election promise in 2013 and raising the provincial sales tax, said Karine Levasseur, who teaches political science at the University of Manitoba.

Pallister was also on the defensive over a vacation home in Costa Rica and the amount of time he has spent there.
