Defence minister commissions India’s first three women fighter pilots
The daredevils of the IAF will fly fighter jets like Sukhoi and Tejas next year after completion of stage-III training in Bidar, Karnataka.

Avani was born in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district. “But the fighter pilot in me took over and all the recovery actions drilled into us during training came out correctly and the aircraft recovered from the spin and so did my confidence”, Kant said. She joined the IAF after completing her B Tech in Computer Science from Banasthali University, Jaipur.
The achievement of the three is a significant milestone for the Indian military, as this is the first time it has permitted women into combat roles.
The women, who flew the Pilatus and Kiran jet trainers, will now get to train on the Hawk- advanced trainer jets- for a year before being allowed to fly supersonic warplanes.
Her father is an engineer in IOCL and is at present posted in Mathura (UP) while her mother is a home maker. Her father is an executive engineer with the state government. She is a B.Tech graduate from BMS Engineering College in Bangalore, after which she had joined Air Force Service Commission. She is a table tennis and likes to paint too.
Mohana Singh, on the other hand, had to deal with bad weather, thunder and lightning on her first solo flight.
Flying cadet Bhawana Kanth also shared her experience and talked about her first solo spin. Mohana did her schooling from Air Force School, New Delhi and BTech in Electronics & Communication from Global Institute of Management and Emerging Technologies, Amritsar.
Mihana says joining the IAF was a dream instilled by gee parents and grandparents. Her grandfather was a flight gunner in Aviation Research Centre and father is a warrant officer in the IAF.

“I wanted to carry on the family legacy of serving the nation by being in defence and what better way than fighter-flying”, said Mohana. As a child, she always dreamt of flying planes.
