Defending champ Stan Wawrinka needs full five sets in first-round win

He’s still The Man: Stan Wawrinka escapes defeat in Paris. He was placed on probation by the ATP a year ago, with the risk of a 28-day suspension, for comments toward 2015 French Open champion Stan Wawrinka during a match in Montreal.

Wawrinka defeated Rosol 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to take a tenuous victory and progress to the second round of the Grand Slam.

A continuation of the Day 2 match interrupted by bad lighting at Roland-Garros saw Murray struggling. He was going for his shot.

“He kept me under pressure permanently”.

Djokovic was in complete control, broke his opponent seven times and closed out the match with a superb drop shot.

“I think I had the music on or something”. So you can stand up, all of you, and go back to work in the office, because I didn’t say that.

Wawrinka and Rosol played four times previously, with Wawrinka winning each one, most recently Friday at Geneva.

Wawrinka won the first set 7-6 as he found himself in trouble, having to save two set points in a first set tiebreaker. Wawrinka’s bid to become the eighth is miraculously still alive.

The opener seemed destined to be decided by a tie-breaker but at 4-5 Chardy faltered on serve and presented the defending champion with two set points.

“I always try to win in three sets”.

Rafael Nadal can win his 200th Grand Slam match on Thursday if he beats Facundo Bagnis of Argentina in the second round of the French Open.

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, 2009 French Open victor Svetlana Kuznetsova and 2014 finalist Simona Halep have all advanced to the third round at Roland Garros. That led to a long-running, and occasionally curse-filled, argument from the 21-year-old Australian, who at one point said the official was “unbelievably biased”. The match was pushed over from Sunday due to the rain and the Romanian world No6 admits it was not easy handling the delays.

“But I didn’t think this”.

“I need to go and rest”. “I was very happy”.

In the women’s draw, fourth-seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain rebounded from losing the first against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova to beat the Slovakian 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Which might explain her slow start against the tricky Slovak.

Vinci’s Italian 16th seeded compatriot Sara Errani, the 2012 runner-up, lost to 2010 Wimbledon semi-finalist Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3, 6-2. “So I didn’t have the time to really warm up”, she said. “I was looking to the sky”, Muguruza told reporters. And also like today, doesn’t matter what happens. Still 18 and playing in only her second major tournament, Naomi Osaka also has yet to drop a set.

The second-seeded Polish player had 13 break chances on Court Suzanne Lenglen and converted six in 6-2, 6-4 victory. The Japanese next faces Andrey Kuznetsov.
