Defending champion Novak Djokovic knocked out by Sam Querrey

When Djokovic returned to court on Saturday, it was still felt a formality that he would win, especially when he won the third set 6-3 either side of another rain delay.

The American was up 7-6 (6), 6-1 in the first two sets on Friday before play was suspended for the day due to rain.

Andy Murray has his feet on the ground after Novak Djokovic’s loss to Sam Querrey on Saturday.

Play began on schedule on the outside courts at 11: 30 a.m., with matches on Centre Court and No. 1 Court set to begin at 1 p.m.

“It was tough”, Querrey said. It was the biggest victory, earned by American professional tennis player who is now ranked 41 in the World.

“I believe in the positive things in life”, Djokovic told reporters.

After such a scalp it would be easy for Querrey to lose focus, but he wants to take full advantage of his victory.

In the fourth round, Querrey went into his next match with all the confidence in the world.

What also abandoned Novak? “But he wasn’t playing his best tennis, and Querrey kept the pressure on with that serve”.

Querrey had to save three break-points in the opening game of the fourth set and three more in the third for a 2-1 lead, his thunderous serve providing a welcome escape route. However, the American hit back immediately as Djokovic, serving for the set, netted a volley on break point. “His game was brutal and I was overpowered today”, said Djokovic after his admission of not being 100 per cent added: “This is not the place or time to talk about it”.

“I played the break-points really well”. Querrey is scheduled to face unseeded Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. He’d made it to the fourth round just three times and the third round just nine times.

“He came out and won the first four games today”, Querrey said of Djokovic. I have plenty of things to look forward to.

“Congratulations to Sam. He played a terrific match”, Djokovic said shortly after walking on court.

“It’s not the first time that I’m losing in a grand slam match, or any match for that matter”. “I have to play tomorrow now”.

“We chose this (date) because I never saw myself as such a great grasscourt player… but winning Eastbourne and now being in the quarter-finals I would change my mind”.

In another upset, two time champion Petra Kvitova, with 43 unforced errors, was ousted by fellow lefty Ekaterina Makarova 7-5 7-6 in the final second-round match to be completed. It’s the fourth time Querrey is into the second week of a major in his career, and just the first since the U.S. Open in 2010. In 2014, Raonic advanced to the semifinals, where he lost to Federer. “There are some pretty decent players left in my way, so I’m not getting carried away”. The margins are small.

“Ivan Lendl is a great person to have on the team when expectations start to build around me because he’s been through the same experience himself”, Murray wrote in his blog for BBC Sport. “Even through the past few years when I haven’t been in the top 20, I beat Djokovic in 2012, I’ve had a couple wins over Kei Nishikori”, he said. It’s not impossible. He can not win straight 200 matches in tennis. “It’s not possible. You’re going to have your losses”. Success has been elusive, with his highest-ever singles ranking being No. 17 in the world, achieved back in 2011.
