Defense carries Patriots past Titans, 33-16

However, instead of taking the low road and forcing Mariota onto the field like some coaches did earlier this year for the Titans, he is wisely protecting the Titans rookie quarterback.

New England’s only score of the third quarter was a 38-yard field goal from Gostkowski.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota has left Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots with an apparent injury to his right knee.

Safety Patrick Chung also left the game with a hip injury. “You can’t control that”, said defensive end Jabaal Sheard . Jones has always been a serviceable pass-rusher, but in 2015, he has taken his game to a new level in that area.

New England responded immediately, capitalizing on Keshawn Martin’s 75-yard kickoff return by scoring a touchdown two plays later.

Mariota sprained his right MCL during Week 15 against the Patriots, and ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports his season is over. He tried to grab it but just wound up knocking it farther away.

The Patriots earned a first-round bye in the playoffs with a win on Sunday and Denver’s loss to Pittsburgh.

“Chandler had that great play and I was just trying to finish it for us”, Hicks said. The Patriots run defense has been very good the last two months for the most part.

The Patriots took another step toward clinching the No. 1 seed in the AFC on Sunday afternoon with a 33-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans at Gillette Stadium.

The Patriots spent Sunday dealing with more injury issues, but if nothing else, it looks like they’ll at least have an extra week to get a little healthier heading into the playoffs.

-QB Zach Mettenberger replaced the injured Marcus Mariota in the first half and threw two touchdown passes, going 20 of 28 for 242 yards and two interceptions. While Mariota didn’t miss any time with that MCL sprain, the Titans have to be a little concerned about his knee injury history at this point. “I don’t expect to be out the rest of the year”.

Mariota completed 3 of 6 passes for 32 yards and was sacked three times, including on his final play, third-and-7 at the New England 23. Mariota has completed three or more touchdown passes on four different occasions during his rookie season.

Rob Gronkowski’s touchdown reception was his 11th of the 2015 season, the 65th of his career.

On the positive side, the Patriots got a productive day from their trio of running backs, veterans Brandon Bolden and James White, along with rookie Joey Iosefa, who made his National Football League debut after getting promoted from the practice squad just days before.
