Defoe praise for Watmore

The 21-year-old forward signed a new four-year deal to keep him at the Stadium of Light last week and he appears to have a glittering future in the game based on his performances this season.

“The only positive is that I can put weight on it. I just hope it’s not ligaments”, Defoe told Sky Sports.

The Sunderland boss hailed his side’s low-quality but resilient 1-0 win at Crystal Palace as a potential turning point in the season. “He’s the future of this club”.

“But the victory gives me confidence to work at it, it gives them more confidence that it can succeed too. If it was, I wouldn’t have performed like I did at Palace”, said Defoe, who is Sunderland’s joint top scorer alongside Steven Fletcher with four Premier League goals this term. If I do that I am only harming myself, when I get the opportunity I am ready.

If you’re keen to back the home win but fancy longer odds there are plenty of opportunities available – you can double up a Palace win with a clean sheet at 7/5 on the Sportsbook for instance, or back Pardew’s side giving up a goal start at [2.62] on the Exchange.

“I have always been that way”.

“The win is so important for the club and everyone is delighted”. The fans at Palace were fantastic and you can imagine the feeling.

Watmore and fellow sub Jeremain Lens had the desired effect from the bench and Defoe was quick to praise them. Palace Dann had a slippy chance and messed up an easy clearance to playthrough Defoe; all to take around the Palace goalkeeper to end this tough game.

“Jeremain [Lens] is a great player too, strong, and the ball just stuck to Danny Graham when he came on – it just shows it is a squad game”.
