DeGrom battered in Mets loss to Marlins, presented by WB Mason

Jose Reyes, playing his first game in Marlins Park since 2012, had a major role in three NY rallies as the Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 5-3 on Friday night.James Loney added a two-run homer in the ninth, turning on a 95-mph fastball from reliever Fernando Rodney and pulling it to the upper deck in right field.

With the loss, the third-place Mets (51-45) trail the Marlins by 1 1⁄2 games for the second wild-card spot.

As we learned in the Home Run Derby, Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton can absolutely crush a baseball.

Stanton now has six homers and 12 RBIs in 10 games against the Mets this season. Despite being only 26 years old, Stanton has the fourth-most homers among active players against the Mets with 27, trailing only Ryan Howard (46), Chase Utley (38) and unemployed Jimmy Rollins (33).

DeGrom (6-5) allowed 10 hits and five runs, both season highs, and lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his shortest outing since August.

“I just think I wasn’t very good and pretty much everything I threw seemed to go down the middle and I paid for it”, deGrom said. “I’ll tell you one thing about the Japanese – they don’t kid”.

The Mets had a chance to claw back against Fernandez. The veteran speedster made his mark in Friday’s 5-3 win, however, with an RBI single among his three hits. But Loney flied out to shallow left and Asdrubal Cabrera struck out, making him hitless in his last 31 at-bats with runners in scoring position. Miami is also 1-4 in Urena’s last five home starts, and 1-5 in Urena’s last six starts overall. “He was steadfast and kept working hard for what he got. For example, they’re 3-9 in their last 12 road games versus a team with a winning record and 2-7 in their last nine road games versus a team with a winning home record.

Stanton hit a no-doubter in the third inning against Mets starter Jacob deGrom at Marlins Park. But it was short-lived.

He gave up a two-out double to Adeiny Hechavarria and an RBI-single to Fernandez in the second and in the third Yelich led off with a double and Stanton hit his monstrous two-run homer off the left-field scoreboard giving the Marlins back the lead at 3-2.

deGrom had a 0.93 ERA in his previous four starts and was coming off a complete game, one-hit shutout against the Phillies in his last outing. Jacob deGrom matchup would still be must-watch television. “It doesn’t help when you throw 30 pitches an inning”, he said. “A lot of pitches in the middle of the plate, a lot of balls up”. I saw [Marlins hitting coach Barry] Bonds, I was with Barry for a long time, and I saw them get him out, too.

Michael Conforto stroked a pinch-hit single in the sixth and played center field for the first time in his career.

“Probably not, ” says New York Mets manager Terry Collins, who managed in Japan and is a friend of Suzukis.

Helping out at the plate, we’ve got a nice assortment of NY hitters.

“But as far as how it felt out there, I felt pretty comfortable. I’m just going to be getting more work at it every single day”. He drove in Yoenis Cespedes, who was hit by a pitch with two outs. Granderson was a center fielder until he reached the twilight of his career.
