DeGrom to rejoin Mets rotation Sunday; Duda also returning

Mets manager Terry Collins revealed the plan for deGrom prior to Friday evening’s game against the Twins, including how bringing him back can start the process of getting the righty ready for possible postseason starts without restriction.

DeGrom threw a bullpen session Friday after throwing a similar one Monday in Washington.

DeGrom, who had been bothered by right forearm soreness, will be limited to about 75 pitches. “I just saw him throw a ‘pen”. We hope he’ll be fine, but we don’t have a crystal ball. How he’s used if he does make it back is a whole other issue, but we’re proceeding as if it were July or August.

That development contributed to a spate of promising health news for a team that has been reeling from injuries all season. Lagares said he feels good enough to play defense and pinch-run for now.

Duda started hitting soft toss in Port St. Lucie and may hit live batting practice soon, Sandy Alderson told reporters in Atlanta on September 9.

“He gives us that option of a Gold Glover to come in late in the game and go play center field”, Collins said.

Lucas Duda (lower back stress fracture) also will be back Saturday, Collins said, and despite not having faced live pitching in four months, could help off the bench.

Jacob deGrom will rejoin the Mets rotation to start Sunday against the Twins, and Steven Matz will throw another bullpen session Saturday, with the hopes of returning to a major league mound soon as well.

The only cloudy medical report came from Wilmer Flores, who took a cortisone shot in his wrist Thursday.

“It doesn’t feel very good right now but hopefully the next couple days it will feel better”, he said. Collins noted the timeline of games left and where deGrom, if all goes well, can be for NY when October rolls around.
