Del Potro renaissance continues at US Open

“That would be the fastest serve I’ve hit, the other best serve was here at the U.S. Open around 138 but I have never hit over 140”.

Murray started like a house on fire and his served prove impenetrable.

Murray will be on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court against Grigor Dimitrov, who has beaten Murray three times and won their only clash this season on the slow hard courts of Miami.

“I’m very happy with how I played, I didn’t make many unforced errors and I made it very tough for him”. And I served very well when I was behind in the games.

“I think it means a lot, especially since I have been losing to Andy a lot”, the sixth seed told reporters. I only did it once. “I’m not expecting to do it again”.

Wawrinka, a former Australian and French Open champion, reached a fourth successive quarter-final in NY with a hard-fought 6-4, 6-1, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3 win over Illya Marchenko, the world No 63 from Ukraine. “It’s going to be a great challenge for me to play him here on the hard court for the first time”.

Andy Murray was the defending champion in 2014 when his 23-year-old opponent swept him out of Wimbledon.

But as well as Murray played here this was as poor an effort as you will see from Dimitrov, whose 2013 Wimbledon semifinal win over the British No. 1 seemed a distant memory.

In another men’s singles event, third-seed Stan Wawrinka also stormed into the last eight round after battling past Ukraine’s Illya Marchenko 6-4, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3.

Dimitrov held his first serve but Murray then tore through the next five, wrapping up the set in 30 minutes and capping it off with a blistering ace.

After one wayward forehand, a dismayed Dimitrov almost kicked the ball into the stands before stopping himself. My level is growing up every day.

Seven of their last eight meetings have involved tie breaks, so [1.7] about their being one again today looks good, as does the over 36.5 games at [2.0], with eight of their last 10 sets against each other going to a minimum of 10 games.

“I played extremely well”.

He’s pretty good. So I expected a tough match. I played a really good match against him in Olympics a few weeks ago. The 142nd-ranked Del Potro was leading eighth-seeded Dominic Thiem 6-3, 3-2 when the Austrian retired with a right knee injury. The first two quarter-finals take place on Tuesday when defending champion Novak Djokovic faces France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Lucas Pouille, the conqueror of Rafael Nadal, tackles French compatriot Gael Monfils.

Serena Williams surpassed Roger Federer for most Grand Slam match victories in tennis’ Open era with No. 308, a 6-2, 6-3 win over Yaroslava Shvedova on Monday to reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals.
