Supporters from both countries have been seen taunting each other from the very first day of the Rio Olympics in the various sporting pavilions across the city.

Aggressive forehand after ferocious forehand from del Potro caused Djokovic’s 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) setback.

Del Potro, now ranked at 145 in the world after being number four in 2010, said Sunday’s win was more special than his victory in 2012. It’s not the first (or) the last time that I’m losing a tennis match.

Djokovic was trying to become just the third man to complete the career Golden Slam of all four majors plus Olympic gold. “I’m here to compete and I’m really enjoying being part of the whole thing”.

Asked if he took an elevator before facing Sousa, del Potro replied with a laugh: “Not today”.

Meanwhile, Del Potro, who found himself stuck in a malfunctioning lift earlier on Sunday, has blown the draw wide open and can look forward to a second round match with Joao Sousa of Portugal.

“Last night I went to bed at 4:30 in the morning. I still can’t believe I beat Djokovic and won again so soon”.

“At the end the match it was complicated and my legs were heavy”, he said. She says she always knows how to play me.

Martina Hingis, playing in her first Olympics in 20 years, teamed up with Timea Bacsinszky to reach the women’s doubles second round.

The Woodies won the men’s doubles gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, beating out former British No. 1 Tim Henman and partner Neil Broad.

He had his first surgery in 2010 but more followed in 2014 and 2015 when he played just six events.
