Delays continue with Delta flights in Atlanta
A day after a systematic failure grounded Delta Air Lines flights around the world, the airline cancelled more flights on Tuesday as it struggled to get travelers to their destinations and crews and equipment in their proper locations.

The cancellations on Tuesday follow about 1000 cancelled flights on Monday and nearly 3000 delayed flights after an outage at its Atlanta headquarters initiated a global meltdown of its booking and communications systems.
The system the airline uses to check in and board passengers as well as dispatch its planes is still slow, said Gil West, Delta’s chief operating officer.
Delta Airlines has begun limited flights after a power outage in Atlanta led to a global computer shutdown.
Osaka-bound flight 172, which was scheduled to depart from Guam on August 9 at 9 a.m. but was awaiting takeoff at 11:50 a.m., was expected to arrive in Osaka at 1:49 p.m.
Customers scheduled to travel this week should check the status of their flight on Delta’s website or via the Fly Delta App.
A waive of its fee to change or cancel a flight to passengers on certain routes: $200 for domestic flights and up to $500 for worldwide flights.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian apologized in a video message Monday for the inconvenience to customers.
The airline added that it would be offering compensation to passengers on delayed and cancelled flights.
Delta is also giving $200 in travel vouchers to those whose flights are canceled or whose flights are delayed more than three hours.
Delta could not re-book passengers onto one of its top rivals and the world’s largest carrier, American Airlines Group Inc, because the two companies ended a ticketing and baggage agreement previous year.
Delta Air Lines passengers around the country are still feeling the effects of nationwide delays after its operations came to a halt following a power outage early Monday morning.
Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx’s office said the government was talking to Delta about technical issues surrounding the outage, but gave no specifics.
Delta spokesman Trebor Banstetter said that after the power outage, key systems and network equipment did not switch over to backups. Delta was able to start resuming departures gradually by mid-morning, but delays and cancellations have persisted as the airline gets back on its feet.

The cancellations, which have left thousands of passengers stranded, are a black eye for Delta and illustrate how dependent companies have become on technology.
