Many tech giants who rely on foreign engineers and experts for the majority of their workforce, including Google, Apple and Netflix, expressed dismay over the order in the last 24 hours. Lyft told CNNMoney in August that 177 Uber employees-contractors armed with a burner phone and a credit card-ordered and canceled more than 5,000 rides. By Saturday evening #DeleteUber was trending on Twitter.
Uber rage has continued, however, with many more users claiming to have deleted the app and attention turning to CEO Travis Kalanick, a member of Trump’s economic advisory group.
According to Uber, the company’s CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick sent an email to Uber employees, criticizing the travel ban. “We are working out a process to identify these drivers and compensate them pro bono during the next three months”, Kalanick wrote. When someone decides to ditch Uber, the details field on the company’s account deletion page provides a prime opportunity to say precisely why the plug is being pulled. However, he said he would raise the issue at President Trump’s first business advisory group meeting on Friday.
Five hours later, Lyft’s cofounders emailed their staff, too.
Look out, Uber and Lyft – your politics are coming front and center in light of Donald Trump’s immigration ban!
“Whatever your view, please know that I’ve always believed in principled confrontation and just change; and have never shied away (maybe to my detriment) from fighting for what’s right”, Kalanick said in his post.
The New York Taxi Workers Alliance, with a membership of 19,000 people, had called on all drivers, including those with Uber and Lyft, not to pick up passengers from JFK and to instead join the protest. “Today we need your help supporting drivers who may be impacted by the President’s unjust immigration ban”.
