The court said that no more debate is needed whether diesel vehicles are more polluting than petrol cars.
In December a year ago, the Supreme Court banned registration of diesel-run SUVs and cars having engine capacity beyond 2,000 cc in Delhi and NCR till March 31, as it unveiled a slew of measures to curb the alarming rise in pollution levels in the city. The ban was earlier till March 31 2016, which was then extend till April 30.
Taxi owners had pleaded before the court that there’s no technology available in the market to convert a diesel auto into one that uses CNG. “Moreover, we have to pay the bank also”, Diwan said.
The court had in December previous year banned the registration of diesel-run SUVs and cars having an engine capacity of 2,000 cc and beyond in the NCR.
The case will be heard next on 9 May.
The Supreme Court had yesterday declined Centre’s request to defer today’s scheduled full-fledged hearing on pollution issues, including the plea of automobile giants.
Referring to the deadline already being extended by a month from March 31 to April 1, the SC observed, “Extensions have been given, you should have thought about alternatives by now”.
