The jail authorities had said he had committed suicide but his family had then alleged that he had been murdered.
Sources in the jail told PTI that he has been suffering from depression and had consumed a heavy dose of anti-depressants before trying to commit suicide. He is kept under observation and police said he is likely to survive.
Six men – one of them a juvenile – have been convicted for the rape and gruesome murder of a paramedic in a moving bus on December 16, 2012. Thirteen days after the assault, she was transferred to a Singapore hospital where she died after two days.
Last year, he had demanded more security in jail alleging that he had been beaten up by other inmates. The victim and her friend were thrown out of the bus after the crime. The juvenile convict was released last December after he served three years in a reformation home.
Four convicts – Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Mukesh Singh and Pawan Gupta were sentenced to death in the case.
“It is necessary that a timeframe of all appeal cases from the high court and the supreme court should be made maximum three months, because there are appeals in death penalty in SC for 10 years to 15 years”.
