“The odd-even formula will only be applicable on private cars plying in Delhi”. According to new rule, Odd cars will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Minister Jain said the restrictions would also apply to all ministers and bureaucrats, and that he would use his auto on alternate days and go for car-pool the rest of the week.

With a population of 21 million, Beijing which has gone to the extent of banning the sale of the new cars to bring down the pollution levels, imposed odd and even number plate system since 2008 Olympics but only periodically during high profile events.

Meanwhile, a senior official of Delhi Traffic Police said that there is no clarity till now regarding the legal provisions under which people who violate the odd-even formula will be prosecuted. Delhi is the most polluted city in India.

Delhi’s Health Minister Satyendra Jain also said that only Emergency vehicles like ambulance and fire brigade cars will be out from this rule.

That’s because beginning January 1, the government of the national capital territory of Delhi (run by a different party to the ruling BJP at the center) proposes that cars be allowed to run on alternate days, depending on whether the last digit on the number plate is even or odd.

Jain also told a TV channel that the odd-even formula will not be applicable on two-wheelers running in the national capital, which was later downplayed by the government, saying the details were yet to be worked out.

The government is trying to add capacity to public transport like Metro and Delhi Transport Corporation, asking the capacity to be increased by about twenty percent. This step, however odd it may sound, can get really beneficial for bus aggregation startups like Shuttl and ZipGo, who can jump on the opportunity to offer their services to more people now. “We are also open to the idea of engaging private security agencies as extra hands for curbing rampant traffic violations”, said the official.

Exemption for two-wheelers was just a suggestion and a final decision is yet to be taken in this regard
