Delhi govt caps price of chikungunya test

While North Delhi has recorded the highest number of dengue cases at 98, South Delhi has recorded the highest number of Chikungunya cases at 25.

According to sources in the hospitals, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) alone recorded 391 cases till August 20, followed by Safdarjung Hospital (246), Apollo Hospital (almost 350), Lok Nayak Hospital (23), Hindu Rao Hospital (28), Kasturba Hospital (11) and the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTBH) has registered three confirmed cases.

Doctors have advised patients and public in general to keep themselves adequately hydrated and not resort to self-medication, and also go for blood tests, before rushing to get admitted in hospitals.

The city has so far reported 432 cases of chikungunya and 487 cases of dengue.

12-year-old Muskan, a resident of Shaheen Bagh inNew Delhi had died on July 29 while 19-year-old Deepak, from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh died of the disease on July 27, both at Safdarjung Hospital.

The sudden spike in chikungunya cases in Delhi and several other parts of north India, has come almost 10 years after a big outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease across the country.

Chikungunya cases in Delhi have shot up to 423, a massive rise in the figure released by civic authorities, who had reported just 20 cases till last week.

Chikungunya is also a viral illness and its symptoms are similar to those of dengue, which include high-grade fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain and headache and joint swelling.

“Only in severe cases should they go for hospitalization”.

Two people have reportedly succumbed to the fever this year.

Dr Rajesh Kumar, senior consultant internal medicine at Paras hospital told Mail Today, “The numbers of dengue and chikungunya patients are surprisingly very high this year and hence we have admitted patients beyond capacity”.

He said hospitals run by the Delhi government were fully prepared to tackle the mosquito menace that causes chikungunya and dengue.

It also warned private hospitals and laboratories and nursing homes against overcharging.

With the death of an 18-year-old boy on Sunday of dengue at Apollo Hospital in south Delhi, the toll has gone upto five due to dengue.

250 cases has been reported by Safdarjung Hospital till August 29
