“Opposition BJP today staged a walkout from the Delhi Assembly during voting on the Bill for hiking salaries, allowances and pensions of MLAs, registering their protest against it”.
In a move that is bound to raise several eyebrows, the Delhi Assembly on Thursday approved a Bill to increase the basic monthly salary of Delhi MLAs and ministers by nearly 400 per cent.
“This steep hike in the salary of the legislator sends a wrong signal to the people in the society”.
Once the Bill is approved, the legislators will be entitled to a communication allowance of Rs 10,000 per month as well as Rs 30,000 as monthly conveyance allowance for each MLA.
When Parliament is in session, they get a daily allowance of Rs 2,000.
Pushkar also said that the worst part of it was that the party brought a “whip” on an issue like salary hike.
“Salary should increase and time to time review should also be made because prices keep increasing”. The Bill also provides for a reimbursable sum of Rs 70,000 per month. The basic salary of legislators has been increased from the current Rs. The hike was proposed by an independent committee of experts. The committee went through the pay and allowance structures of many state assemblies as well as those of the United States Congress, United Kingdom, Australia and many other Commonwealth nations.

The Congress which was no lawmakers in the Assembly and the BJP which holds three seats had opposed the hike.
