The agents of different student outfits, backed by various political parties, tried their level best to woo the students and persuade them to vote for their respective candidates.
As polling began at both North campus and South campus of Delhi University, more party volunteers were present on campus than voting students. “The turnout was poor because several first-year and second-year students weren’t issued ID cards in time”, she alleged. In the keenly contested Presidents post, Amit Tanwar got 16,357 votes defeating NSUI candidate Nikhil Yadav by a margin of 4,680 votes, Rawat said.
Seven candidates are in race for the post of President and four for the post of Vice-President.
In fact, the main fight for the post of JNUSU president was witnessed between Mohit Pandey of AISA-SFI alliance and BAPSA’s Rahul Sonpimple.
Other organisations which have fielded their candidates in the JNU polls include Congress’ National Students Union of India and Democratic Students Federation (DSF).
Unlike in the DU, ballot papers are used in the JNUSU polls. The party also raised concerns about the manner in which the votes were counted and demanded that footage for the same be made available. “Congrats to ABVP. #DUSU verdict is triumph of Nationalism”.
The footfall was relatively low in the first half, but as the day wore on students came in heavy numbers to cast their vote.
Several high profile BJP leaders including Shahnawaz Hussain and MP Mahesh Girri this year had tweeted asking students to elect “nationalists” in this year’s elections.
Sharjeel Imam, an M. Phil.(History) student and AISA member, also said that the fight is between ABVP and the AISA-SFI alliance only.
“It is very unpredictable this year”. So, I have no clue about who all are contesting.
Yet again, the Congress-backed National Students Union of India (NSUI) did not make a mark in the JNUSU polls.

Although it is being claimed that students have not shown in as large numbers as they would have because college elections for a few colleges have been postponed, some claimed the university administration is responsible for this disenchantment of students.
